Ant Street Inn, Brenham, Texas

My wife and I recently stayed in the Ant Street Inn in Brenham, Texas. I have no stake in or other connection to the place, but it's delightful and I recommend it strongly. Located in the old downtown area, which has been nicely preserved, the inn is a cross between a bed and breakfast and a small boutique hotel.

If you need to spend the night in Brenham and are looking for something other than a crash pad, the Ant Street Inn is the place. If you live within a radius such that you can get away for the weekend to stay there, you won't be disappointed. We certainly plan to go back.

If you need to clinch the deal, they even offer free ice cream. This being Brenham, of course it's Blue Bell.

Senator Hutchison Wants to be Gov

U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is making progress in her attempt to wrest the GOP gubernatorial from Rick Perry. I do not particularly support Rick Perry, though neither do I particularly oppose him. He hasn't screwed things up too badly.

Kay Bailey is another story altogether. She has been resistant to earmark reform , an issue contributing to Republican defeats at the federal level. For that reason alone, she deserves to lose.

Senator Hutchison wants to be gov,
But when asked about earmarks, she gave us a shove.
No matter however she gives it a spin,
I'll not trust Hutchison ever again.

When it's hot and dry in Texas

When it’s hot and dry in Texas, it’s hot and dry for sure.
The cattle turn to skeletons; the dust is fine and pure.
The sun will bake your skin on through, yep, right on down to bone.
The roosters give up crowing, and the goats can hardly moan.

You see mirages dancing on the highway up ahead.
If you count on them for water, you are going to wind up dead.
The rivers stop their flowing, and the tanks get filled with dust,
And the hogs’ll eat on prickly pear, just doing what they must.

The crops all shrivel in the fields, just turning brown and crisp.
If you get a cotton boll, it’s nothing but a whisp.
The sorghum won’t keep mice alive, the corn is worthless, too.
Farming dry in Texas is a thing you’ll come to rue.

The ranchers keep on struggling, asking God for rain,
But the bankers look for payments, feeling their own pain.
There ain’t two ways about it. When the weather’s hot and dry,
In the parched dust of Texas, things are going to die.
